The Luminale

Concept

“Light and City” are at the heart of the Luminale. Since 2002, in two-year cycles, the popular event accompanies Light + Building, the world’s leading trade fair for Light and Building Technology. The Festival of Light is among the most significant events of Frankfurt and the Rhine-Main region.

The Luminale enlightens and illuminates:

Frankfurt, the metropolis on the River Main, will not only be the stage for light art, but also the focus of the Biennial. Growing dynamically, the city faces the challenge of shaping this growth sustainably and bringing it into harmony with the life style of its residents. Urbanisation, climate change, digitisation and migration - in Frankfurt, global developments converge, as in a crucible, in the smallest space.

More than ever, these complex tasks need differing viewpoints and the connectivity of experts from the worlds of technology, ecology, commerce, architecture and sociology. They demand the visionary power of art, the ability to deal with urban change and, not least, the involvement and commitment of the citizens.

Light, art, urban society and technology - in the overlapping of the disciplines lies the chance of developing a vision of the future, together. The concurrence of light festival, world’s leading trade fair, and a debate about urban planning and design opens the doors to dialog, discourse, inspiration and a new, sensory integration of art and industry.

The Luminale programme is divided into five categories: ART unites excellent light art and theme-related, artistic works. SOLUTIONS, comprises, talks, expert panels and discussions on urban design, etc.. STUDY bundles theme-related entries from colleges, universities and other educational institutions. COMMUNITY is open to clubs, associations, institutions and the city’s creative minds, integrating residents within the festival design. In the BETTER CITY section, at least one project shall remain permanently for residents.
