»...ALL ART MUST BE PRECEDED BY CRAFTSMANSHIP«

A project by Herbert Cybulska and Gabriele Geiss

»Craftsmanship. The economic power of next door« stands as a brand for tradition, but also for future and innovation. With the dual training system, the business sector lays the foundation for a prosperous location, helps to implement current topics such as Economy 4.0, smart construction, or energy efficiency, and thus helps to sustainably shape FrankfurtRhineMain.

Handcraft and light art, together, have lastingly re-staged the building of the Frankfurt Rhine-Main Chamber of Crafts and Trades in the Bockenheimer Landstraße 21. The facade, first mentioned in Frankfurt’s archives in 1885/86, breaches the dominant appearance of cool office building facades and ceiling-mounted fluorescent lamps in the banking metropolis. Handcrafted displays narrate the evolution of the wrenching times of digitalization. Programmable soffits allow for a variety of different light images – as varied as the craft – for »...ALLER KUNST MUSS DAS HANDWERK VORAUSGEHEN / ALL ART MUST BE PRECEDED BY CRAFTSMANSHIP« . (J. W. v. Goethe,Wilhelm Meister's Years of Travel, 1821 ).

The Chamber of Crafts and Trades supports the interests of approx. 34,000 entrepreneurs, 150,000 craftsmen, as well as 10,000 apprentices and trainees in 130 professions, at a total of six locations in FrankfurtRhineMain and Brussels.
