Luminale Premiere for the Alte Oper (Old Opera House): The limestone façade, built in the Renaissance style, will become a projection screen for the design collective Karmachina. In five chapters, the Milanese artists tell the story of the edifice in grand historic images, graphic animations and video streams, accompanied by a specially-composed soundtrack.
In a broad dramaturgical arc, the 10-minute show outlines the major phases and turning points in the history of today’s Alte Oper: the building of the original theatre, inauguration of the opera house on 20th October, 1880, and the glittering years until the Second World War, its destruction by bombs and fire in 1944, the subsequent reconstruction thanks to civic engagement and its new life as concert and congress hall.
Visual elements exactly matched to the architecture and dramatically-integrated 3D effects set the façade in motion. Masterpieces by some of the greatest painters are brought to life and underscore the magnificent atmosphere of the years as opera house and center of the city’s social and cultural life. For these sections, the Städel Museum has provided public domain works from its collection. A cutting-edge 3D sound system contributes to an immersive experience on the Opernplatz. The novel audio technology enables a spatially-differentiated sound and lends the production an extra dimension.
Karmachina is an artists’ collective from Milan revolving around video artist Rino Stefano Tagliafierro. In collaboration with Vinicio Bordin and Paolo Ranieri, Karmachina creates site-specific installations and 3D mappings, characterized by original artistic identity and narrative technique. Light, sound, graphic and cinematic elements combine into multi-media, image-shaping works, which lend expression to the significance of a location.
