Facade illumination – Central Railway Station

Main entrance illumination

A project of Christian Uitz, Raumlabor

For the Luminale 2014, the facade of the main entrance of Frankfurt’s Central Railway Station was illuminated for the first time. As a cultural heritage stipulation, the colored illumination was coupled with the historic opening date (18th August, 1888), and therefore only on view for a few days a year, around 18th August. On the occasion of the Luminale 2018, the building can, once again, be plunged into atmospheric light for a couple of days and so present its prize-winning illumination (German Light Design Award).

The specific alignment and precision of the lamps create a contrast and vivid reproduction of the surfaces and structures with an unprecedented intensity. The characteristics of the sandstone façade, renovated in 2014, are accentuated by the illuminations, thus commemorating the historic significance of the elaborately-restored and partially supplemented allegories. Cutting-edge LED technology enabled the implementation of sustainable, energy-efficient illumination, with a simultaneous reduction of light emissions.
