Light + Light = Shadow

A project by Hans Peter Böffgen, Bendix Dethleffsen and Lydia Ried (Projektkoordination)

The location is one of the loveliest rooms in the town center and yet completely unknown to many of its residents: the Weihalle der Unitarishen Freien Relgionsgemeinde in Frankfurt am Main (Consecration Hall of the Unitarian Free Religious Community). The floor plan of this extraordinary building, concevied as an oval, is modelled on Frankfurt' St. Paul's Church, making the projection screen in the hall's curved interior resemble a drive-in cinema.

Hans Peter Böffgen uses this space for his installation: Here a film, Frankfurt-by-Night, will be projected, musically accompanied on the church organ. In the surrounding room, gleaming everyday objects shadow the projection. Visitors are given flashlights so they can orient themselves and take part in the play of light. Points of light play within the room, uncontrolled, surprising, free.

Hans Peter Böffgen, film maker and painter in Frankfurt am Main for over 30 years, received his training at the Dusseldorf Academy of Arts and the University of California in San Diego. His artistic work has led him to South America, the Caribbean and Siberia. He is currently living and working in Frankfurt.

Bendix Dethleffsen works on the cutting-edge of theater and music: as musical director, conductor, pianist and actor. In 2006, this versatility led him to collaborate with Christoph Marthaler, with whom he has been working very closely ever since. He also works for and with Johan Simons, René Pollesch, Christiane Pohle, Philipp Stölzl, among many others. Bendix Dethleffsen is currently appearing in Marthaler's BEKANNTE GEFÜHLE, GEMISCHTE GESICHTER (Familiar Feelings, Mixed Faces), as well as KING SIZE and ISOLDE'S ABENDBROT (Isolde's Supper); at the Kammerspielen Munich; MITTELREICH (Middle Kingdom) and EYES WIDE SHUT at the Toneelgroup Maastricht.

From 6 to 10 pm on Friday, 23rd March, families with children (over 4) are warmly invited to visit and enjoy the installation. Cocoa and a hot drink for older visitors are included (donations for beverages will be gratefully received). We would ask that visitors register before 20th March, 2018 by phone: 069/28 03 82 or online
