The Light of the World

A project by Michael Saup

With ORBIS LUMEN, Michael Saup presents a three-dimensional Dymaxion world map made of sugar cubes. The Dymaxion map was developed by the American architect Richard Buckminster Fuller in the 1940s and is regarded as the only satisfactory representation of the entire world on a two-dimensional level.

Saup's three-dimensional map is positioned on a transparent platform. Animated light patterns illuminate the sugar cubes from below. Animated world models are projected from above onto the white sugar landscape. With the sugar cubes as "pixels", the Berlin artist emphasizes the intimate relationship between information, energy, resources and the resulting effects on the biosphere. ORBIS LUMEN is a symbol of the earth, which addresses complex planetary contexts and promotes their understanding.
