The Guardians

From the “Aquarium“ Series

A project by Zero Reiko Ishihara

Frankfurt artist Zero Reiko Ishihara’s work found its starting point on the glass surfaces of the distinctive, conical entrances to the Festhalle/Messe subway station. Embellished with motifs of semi-transparent foil, they cast colored shadows outwards during the evening - and inwards during the day. Two guardian figures are often to be found outside the entrances of Japanese Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines, to defend against evil spirits. Zero Reiko Ishihara positions her colossal GUARDIENS on the surfaces of the subway station’s glass cones.

The subway is one of the city's arteries, connecting one place with the other. The Messe (Trade Fair) Frankfurt is likewise a gateway to the world through communication and trade. Day and night, the guardians welcome visitors to the fair and to the city. They observe all the comings and goings; a tranquil, somewhat modest work, which can be associated with the concept of Asiatic shadow plays and is yet a perceptible presence in the urban space.
