Thementag Stadt und Licht

Eine Veranstaltung der Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences

Die sprunghaften Ausmaße in urbaner Entwicklung und neuen Lichtsystemen verändern heutzutage die Dimensionen unseres Stadtlichts. Es stellt sich die Frage, ob und wie Städte von nun an von innen heraus als Kunstwerke leuchten werden.

Urbane Räume der Lichtkunst

Der anhaltende paradigmatische Wandel in Europa in Bezug auf die Nutzung von Energie und den Verbrauch von Ressourcen am Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts, führt weltweit zu neuen Lichtsystemen und Leuchtmitteln – eine Entwicklung, die dazu führt, dass heute Licht als eigenständiges Baumaterial genutzt wird.

Weltweit zielen aktuelle Projekte darauf ab, eigenständige räumliche Lichtkonstruktionen zu erforschen, damit bestehende Räume zu erweitern, neue Räume zu erschaffen und ein Bewusstsein für Räume städtischer Lichtkunst zu wecken. 

Licht Topographien

Wenn wir einmal aus der Zukunft in diese Gegenwart blicken werden, dann werden wir Städte anhand ihres Lichts und ihrer Dunkelheit definieren und neu formulieren. Die Entwicklung der Stadt heute und die Dimensionen ihrer städtischen Beleuchtung finden in einem Ausmaß statt, welche eine neue Ära einläuten. Es sind nicht mehr die Straßenbeleuchtung oder einzelne Gebäude, die mittels Licht hervorgehoben werden; vielmehr werden Licht-Raum-Konfigurationen als Ganzes hervorgehoben, sie sind Aussagen über das Gesamtbild und Image einer Stadt. Darüber hinaus wird das Stadtlicht über Licht-Stadtansichten und Licht-Landschaften zu Licht-Topographien führen.

Die Zukunft von Stadtlicht als Kunstmedium

Das profunde Potential, die Bedeutung, die Wirkung und die verbindende Kraft von städtischem Licht sind noch nicht verstanden und vollends entwickelt – weder das von Licht als einem urbanen Lagerfeuer, das Menschen zusammenbringt und Identität, Schutz, Magie und Stille erschafft, und dadurch die Lebensqualität und Vitalität der Menschen verbessert, noch die Kraft des Lichtes zur Vertiefung des Verständnisses unserer Welt als ein Kunstwerk.

Thorsten Bauer: Augmented spaces – about the digital future of our cities

Award winning Creative Director of international installations in the field of Projection Mapping and Media Architecture. Founder of the artist collective Urbanscreen and co-founder of the Urbanscreen GmbH Co&KG. Freelance Creative Director, Curator, and Consultant for immersive media installations.

"A digital revolution is beginning, and it’s taking place within the real space. We can see it manifesting in the form of media architectures that increasingly enhance our urban landscape with large scale digital interfaces. This development offers architects, lighting designers, content designers and technical providers unprecedented means to execute ambitious and expansive lighting projects. But it also poses great challenges to those attempting to create responsible and sustainable media architecture projects. To shape our future digital cities for increased livability, we must radically rethink traditional design processes, considering media architectures as digital dynamic architectures, retaining the city’s and building’s identity and integrity.

 

 

 

 

Niels Gutschow: Myth and Light – From Space for Salvation to the Banality of Illumination

Niels Gutschow studied architecture at Technical University Darmstadt. He is researching on war-time and post-war architecture and town planning in Europe and the history of architecture and sacred landscapes in India and Nepal. Honorary professor at Heidelberg University. Major Publications: Benares. The Sacred Landscape of Varanasi, Stuttgart 2006 and  Architecture of the Newars, Chicago 2011.

"Myths tell us about life and coming-into-being of the world. In our imagination, fire and light define sacred spaces as spiritually charged, enlightened spaces. In contrast, to light space, be it exterior or interior, or an object is essentially a secular occurrence, which gains meaning when it is designed."

 

 

 

 

 

 

Tran Quoc Khanh: Autonomous driving in a future city --- Signaling tasks for the lighting technology

Diploma Technical University Ilmenau, Precision engineering. Ph.D. thesis at the faculty for Physics and electronic devices, Technical University Ilmenau. Project leader for radiometric and photometric systems in Munich and Berlin. Habilitation on mesopic vision, color image processing and color appearance. Professor for Lighting Technology, Fachgebiet Licht, Technical University Darmstadt.

"The lecture describes the development of the autonomous driving until 2060 and the need for communication between manually, partly manually and fully computer-regulated vehicles and other traffic participants (pedestrians, bicycles) with different age groups. In this context, new signaling elements in different color, sizes and positions around the vehicles shall be defined, additionally to the current head-and rear lamps." 

 

 

 

 

 

Mark Major: Lifting the Veil -- Reinterpreting the city after dark

Mark Major trained and practiced as an architect prior to focusing on the relationship between light and architecture. He has worked on lighting projects including the Millennium Dome, 30 St. Mary Axe, Beijing International Airport, the refurbishment of Royal Festival Hall and the re-lighting of the interior of St. Paul’s Cathedral. Mark has lectured extensively in the UK, Europe, Scandinavia, U.S. and Australia.

"As the veil of night descends the city often becomes a visually incoherent and illegible place. We are only able to continue to work, rest and play in our urban environment through the use of artificial light. In many cases we simply seek to extend the day rather than enhance the qualities of the night. To do so requires a co-ordinated and holistic approach. This richly illustrated talk will examine how light and darkness can be better employed to create a new interpretation of the city after dark with the aim of improving people’s experience of public space. It will examine the issues that need to be considered with reference to specific case studies."

 

 

 

 

Roger Narboni: Lighting strategies for large urban territories

Roger Narboni founded in 1988 CONCEPTO lighting design studio near Paris. He launched in 1987 a new discipline called Light Urbanism and has realised more than 130 lighting master plans and numerous landscape, urban and architectural lightings e.g. Cathedral of Paris, nightscape of Grand Canal in Hangzhou, Main Gate Old City Jerusalem. He teaches Lighting Design and directs professional workshops worldwide.

"The tremendous growth of cities, their mutation and their continuous development have led for many of them to absorption or major changes in the natural geographic site that has been the source of their foundation. Therefore, these large urban territories cannot be seen anymore at night with the unique prism of functional lighting. They deserve a new thinking and new lighting strategies that will naturally balance urban lighting and darkness at a very large scale in order to reconcile in the future the citizens of these new territories with their night environment."

 

 

 

 

Wolfgang Rang: Wandering Lights

Wolfgang Rangstudied architecture at the Technical University Darmstadt and at the University of California, Los Angeles. Wolfgang taught at Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences. From 1979 until 1996 he was co-owner of the architectural firm Berghof Landes Rang. He has been running the Atelier Wolfgang Rang since 1996. Material and immaterial architectural and spatial creations.

"The ongoing paradigmatic change in regard to the use of energy and the consumption of resources is giving rise to new light systems and lighting appliances -- a development leading to the use of light as a building material in its own right. Similar to the process of architectural design, where volumes create interspaces, light spaces make these interspaces visible and make it possible to experience unexpected spatial constellations as still lives of light. Light sculptures as street lighting become urban-regional guidelines and signposts of light. And the light of a city in its silhouette expands into a stand-alone spatial structure of light, adding on to existing spaces, creating new spaces and evoking an awareness of urban light art spaces."

 

 

 

 

Charles G Stone: City Light: Pieces, Places, and Postcards  

An early interest in the theater led to a career in architectural lighting design, joining Fisher Marantz Stone in 1983, where he became the President in 2003. Charles has designed projects such as Carnegie Hall, the Washington Monument, American Museum of Natural History, and the Hong Kong International Airport.

His annual Traveling Light speaking tour includes universities and conferences around the world.

"Cities are reinventing the night. Mayors and public-private partnerships, developers and urban planners, architects and lighting designers are being tasked to re-imagine and re-light the public realm to achieve new visions of the city that accomplish and encompass beautification, safety, technological wonders, and sustainability. Lighting Designers must consider not only new and exciting smart street-lighting and energy saving LED retrofit strategies; but also, the uniquely indigenous opportunities found in each city’s waterfronts, promenades, bridges, building façades, and the possibility of dynamic lighting “shows”. The work consists of many puzzle pieces, at many places in each city, and a yearning for beautiful evening skylines - postcards of City Light."
